About
I was born and raised in Minneapolis, graduating high school from the Perpich Center for Arts Education in the visual arts department in 2012. I moved to Brooklyn in 2012 and received my BFA from Pratt Institute for Fine Art with a concentration in drawing in 2016. I continue to live in Brooklyn, making paintings in my studio alongside work at a custom cabinetry and fabrication studio in Greenpoint.
Statement
My work focuses on the austere and colloquial. I want to depict my everyday surroundings and the emotions that are had within. I seek to achieve a narrative weight of composition that describes what is unsaid in words, and pronounced in body language.
My practice is informed by isometric, structural drawing. The content is inspired by my everyday settings and actions- furniture that I make at my shop, crates that hold tools, ladders that I use, and chairs that I sit on. I work mainly from my head, and secondly from observation. In this regard I draw from Cambiaso, and my mentor, Pier Consagra. I print out textures on a laser printer at a coffee shop nearby my studio and collage those swatches into the piece in order to accentuate the details of the surroundings.
The pregnant pause is a liminal space that offers more without words than with. My pieces depict a moment of question, anticipation, and change to be had. In these moments, our environs take on a charged presence. I treat the objects in my paintings as another figure.
